REVIEW: BIGFISH'S CREAM HALLOWEEN BALL

10/31/2008 / Comments (0) / by miguel

Tony McGuinness & Paavo Siljamaki from Above & Beyond performs in this year's Cream Halloween Ball

Photobucket

bigfish really knows how to brew an event that you will not only enjoy but also remember long after dancing has stopped (or, paused). this year's cream halloween ball was absolutely smashing. there is really something different in relation to the dance events that bigfish produces: the set-up, effects, decos, pyros, confetti, and specially the music of the superstar DJs they bring over can't be matched by other events (without the bigfish stamp on it).

being a die-hard fan of electronica (specially the sub-genre: trance) i absolutely enjoyed the music as above & beyond dropped tunes that were putting me into, well... trance. Even two of my friends who weren't really avid listeners of electronica (a rocker & indie boy) were really getting into the groove.

some creative costumes i noticed in the event : Lady GaGa, the 'queen'?, a toilet, dorks (if 'cowboy' was the trend a few years back... dorks is this year's.. am i delusional?), joker, batman, spiderman, pharoahs, op, cops, sexy angels, sexy devils.. i'm pretty sure I missed a whole lot more. Thanks to Samantha from Bigfish for allowing pghqtv to cover the event for our site.

photos from the event will be posted soon.

i'm not done. you have ONE month to recover for bigfish is bringing another superstar DJ to our shores... unbelievable!

MINISTRY OF SOUND: THE ANNUAL 2009

image from www.ministryofsound.com

MoS : The Annual is perhaps the only compilation album you need to buy this year. i have been religiously buying the annual for about seven years now (dating back to the annual 2002). even if you are not an avid listener of dance/electronica, there is still something in store for you for the mix is usually comprised of revamped versions of mainstream hits, current dancefloor shakers, and future chart toppers (believe me on this one, i was introduced to iio, daniel bedingfield, and royksopp way before they shot up to stardom). If you are unfamiliar with 'the annual' you might be wondering why it would be dated '2009' when it is only '2008'. Well, besides the fact that it is always released when new years is fast approaching, the +1 year suggests that what you would be hearing are choons that will conquer radio waves the following year. it is a round-up of dance songs from 2008 as well as a prophecy of what the sound of 2009 will be like (or at least, this is what i think about why the annual always dates a year ahead).

for the complete tracklisting click here

oddysey records (philippines), usually (not always) imports the UK version of 'the annual'. In any case, you can always purchase it online, they have packages that includes 'the annual' with the original MoS scent - one for a boy and one for a girl.

MUSIC WE LIK: PRIORS

10/28/2008 / Comments (0) / by Mark Lim

priors (http://www.myspace.com/priorsmusic) is a an electro pop outfit that features the collaboration between modjo's yann destal and kitsune's raw man. they only have one song out but they've become a favorite of mine already.

give them a listen with this song - priors - what you need via ohhcrapp.net
and while you're there, check out the video and remix they posted of ladyhawke's my delirium. it's awesome.

---

we know it's not fair that we only feature foreign artists, but we're working hard on trying to get exclusive interviews and performances from local bands and artists as well. if you want to see someone featured in this blog, tell us who so we can get on it. peace out.

MUSIC WE LIKE: LYKKE LI; THE HOOD INTERNET

10/23/2008 / Comments (0) / by Mark Lim

lykke li (http://www.lykkeli.com) is a 22 year old swedish (where most good pop music comes from these days) singer who actually kind of looks like scarlett johanssen. her first album, youth novels, has gotten loads of acclaim from both the critics as well as the music blogs. it's kind of hard to describe what her music sounds like, so i guess it's better to just show you..

lykke li - little bit

----------

meanwhile, the hood internet (http://www.thehoodinternet.com) are a chicago-based group specializing in mashups of hiphop tracks with indie and sometimes pop songs. though the artists they decide to mash together would make you go wtf (dizzee rascal vs cyndi lauper?), somehow they make it work. they regularly release a compilation of their mashups on their site, and recently released volume 3.

i decide to feature them both at the same time because it turns out i wasn't the only one infatuated with lykke li's music. the hood internet is as well, and they decided to make a lykke li mashup album featuring six of her songs mixed with the likes of booka shade, digitalism, and gui boratto. this one is massive.

CHIC HOMEPAGES: WE'LL SHOW YOU HOW!

10/22/2008 / Comments (0) / by Mark Lim

gosh, i sound like a magazine cover. anyway, i know homepages aren't the most glamorous of things, but not a lot of you might be aware of such a thing as iGoogle. (i know, such an original name right?). well igoogle is a service that is meant to be a replacement for whatever is your homepage right now. it is meant to be a one-stop source for all the other places you need to go when you open up your browser. i know, sounds boring right? well, quite recently google collaborated with some artists and designers to make what is known as "artist themes"

Photobucket

artist themes range from brands such as gucci, to musicians like coldplay and radiohead, and a whole range of designers i don't even know about (we have bj for that).

what's cool with igoogle is that it is highly customizable. there are widgets for almost anything you need and use online. have a gmail account? you can check it right there, just add the appropriate widget for it. got a blog you read often, then just grab the rss and add it yourself, and voila, you have a gadget for it.

Photobucket
*hint hint* *nudge nudge*

but arguably the coolest part about igoogle is that themes themselves change by the hour, so you're never stuck with that one boring image.
for example:

jimmy choo

philippe starck

so there you go, you're now the kid with the coolest homepage at the office.
you're welcome. =D

WHEN YOU JUST CAN'T SAY IT IN PERSON: SAY IT WITH NOTES!

10/20/2008 / Comments (0) / by Mark Lim

passive-aggressive notes (http://www.passiveaggressivenotes.com) is a website that chronicles the "painfully polite and hilariously hostile writings from shared spaces the world over". the notes found in the blog range from subtle hints of displeasure to outright angry death threats, and all very funny. i've been guilty of leaving notes of the kind myself, but after reading some of the notes from the site, i think i'll refrain from doing such anymore, since i think the desired effect is rarely achieved.

MUSIC WE LIKE (AND YOU SHOULD TOO): LADYHAWKE

10/19/2008 / Comments (1) / by Mark Lim

Ladyhawke (http://www.myspace.com/ladyhawkerock) is the alias of New Zealander Pip Brown, an indie pop darling whose music is a throwback to the sound of those great female 80's icons. In each of her songs she seems to be channeling a particular muse, be it Blondie or Nicks, and maybe even a bit of "Like A Virgin" era Madonna. Her songs all have killer hooks and catchy choruses that will bound to get you singing along before the song ends. This is definitely one Kiwi to watch out for.

isn't the snoopy shirt simply adorable?

COOL APP: WORD CLOCK SCREENSAVER

10/17/2008 / Comments (3) / by Mark Lim

word clock is a screensaver with a unique way of telling you the time. instead of showing you numbers and/or dials, it gives you the actual words of the date and time as it happens. the current time and date is highlighted from a list of all possible words. since it is highly customizable, you can even choose to only show the time and not the date, as well as change the colors of the words. it even has multiple languages supported. (unfortunately, filipino is not on the list. yet.) i've lost lots of time just staring at the thing since i find it so fascinating. and i'm sure you will too.

a video demonstration of how it works:

APPLE REFRESHES MACBOOK LINE. NOW SPORTS MULTITOUCH AND ALUMINUM CASING

10/15/2008 / Comments (0) / by Mark Lim

apple has updated its line of notebooks, and all of them now sport led-backlit displays, aluminum casing and multitouch trackpads. also, the macbook (along with the air) now sport nvidia gpu's, which are a markedly significant improvement over the previous intel integrated graphic chips. what this basically means is, the macbook is now a somewhat decent gaming machine. expect these babies to arrive on our shores in the next few weeks, and just in time for xmas.
