CK One Ad

A very positive ad from ck one. Hmm, I do not find it super appealing... maybe its targetted for older hippies?

The track is available for free download over at the official ck one website

WHITE LIES

1/19/2009 / Comments (0) / by Mark Lim

white lies are a post-punk indie band from london. their debut album, "to lose my life..." comes out today. their song "death" has a killers' human-esque vibe to it, though i somewhat prefer the former. check out their music video for the song.

EMPIRE OF THE SUN

empire of the sun are an australian duo and their eponymous first track from their first album, walking on a dream, is a 80's synthpop track which feels as epic as the movie that shares the band's name. equally epic looking is the music video for said track, which was shot on location in shanghai:

i believe this will be the sound of 2009, which could as well be the sound of 1989.

AMAZING COVERS: UMBRELLA EDITION

after that amazing concert, it's only fitting that we do a music post related to that massive rihanna hit that brought the house down at the end of the show. here are some other people's takes on the song. we won't include the more famous covers (ie mandy moore) only those that you might not know about but we think are remarkably good. enjoy.

Among the dizzying whirl of music media that are hitting the market today comes a Filipino music portal that mixes the emerging new media and evolving Filipino music. As a virtual and more interactive extension of the local music store Odyssey comes
Odysseylive.net : an online networking website that caters to Filipino music, artists, and listeners of the new generation. It is primarily a music portal that allows users to stream music for free while browsing the pages of different artists and bands.

The site is similar to other networking websites in a sense that it is essentially a social networking site showcasing blogging, video-posting, and photo-uploading characteristics. However, as a music website, it extends beyond more than the usual features that other social networking sites offer. Individuals can sign up either as listeners or musicians, and are free to post as much music, photos, videos without limit. Plus, it enables easier and more open interaction between the listeners and the musicians.

Ultimately, Odysseylive.net serves as an arena dedicated especially for creating relationships between the artists and listeners. Although it is designed specifically for Filipinos, foreign artists and listeners are also welcome to enjoy the features of the site and experience Pinoy music.

REVIEW: BIGFISH'S CREAM HALLOWEEN BALL

10/31/2008 / Comments (0) / by miguel

Tony McGuinness & Paavo Siljamaki from Above & Beyond performs in this year's Cream Halloween Ball

Photobucket

bigfish really knows how to brew an event that you will not only enjoy but also remember long after dancing has stopped (or, paused). this year's cream halloween ball was absolutely smashing. there is really something different in relation to the dance events that bigfish produces: the set-up, effects, decos, pyros, confetti, and specially the music of the superstar DJs they bring over can't be matched by other events (without the bigfish stamp on it).

being a die-hard fan of electronica (specially the sub-genre: trance) i absolutely enjoyed the music as above & beyond dropped tunes that were putting me into, well... trance. Even two of my friends who weren't really avid listeners of electronica (a rocker & indie boy) were really getting into the groove.

some creative costumes i noticed in the event : Lady GaGa, the 'queen'?, a toilet, dorks (if 'cowboy' was the trend a few years back... dorks is this year's.. am i delusional?), joker, batman, spiderman, pharoahs, op, cops, sexy angels, sexy devils.. i'm pretty sure I missed a whole lot more. Thanks to Samantha from Bigfish for allowing pghqtv to cover the event for our site.

photos from the event will be posted soon.

i'm not done. you have ONE month to recover for bigfish is bringing another superstar DJ to our shores... unbelievable!

MINISTRY OF SOUND: THE ANNUAL 2009

10/30/2008 / Comments (0) / by miguel

image from www.ministryofsound.com

MoS : The Annual is perhaps the only compilation album you need to buy this year. i have been religiously buying the annual for about seven years now (dating back to the annual 2002). even if you are not an avid listener of dance/electronica, there is still something in store for you for the mix is usually comprised of revamped versions of mainstream hits, current dancefloor shakers, and future chart toppers (believe me on this one, i was introduced to iio, daniel bedingfield, and royksopp way before they shot up to stardom). If you are unfamiliar with 'the annual' you might be wondering why it would be dated '2009' when it is only '2008'. Well, besides the fact that it is always released when new years is fast approaching, the +1 year suggests that what you would be hearing are choons that will conquer radio waves the following year. it is a round-up of dance songs from 2008 as well as a prophecy of what the sound of 2009 will be like (or at least, this is what i think about why the annual always dates a year ahead).

for the complete tracklisting click here

oddysey records (philippines), usually (not always) imports the UK version of 'the annual'. In any case, you can always purchase it online, they have packages that includes 'the annual' with the original MoS scent - one for a boy and one for a girl.

MUSIC WE LIK: PRIORS

10/28/2008 / Comments (0) / by Mark Lim

priors (http://www.myspace.com/priorsmusic) is a an electro pop outfit that features the collaboration between modjo's yann destal and kitsune's raw man. they only have one song out but they've become a favorite of mine already.

give them a listen with this song - priors - what you need via ohhcrapp.net
and while you're there, check out the video and remix they posted of ladyhawke's my delirium. it's awesome.

---

we know it's not fair that we only feature foreign artists, but we're working hard on trying to get exclusive interviews and performances from local bands and artists as well. if you want to see someone featured in this blog, tell us who so we can get on it. peace out.

MUSIC WE LIKE: LYKKE LI; THE HOOD INTERNET

10/23/2008 / Comments (0) / by Mark Lim

lykke li (http://www.lykkeli.com) is a 22 year old swedish (where most good pop music comes from these days) singer who actually kind of looks like scarlett johanssen. her first album, youth novels, has gotten loads of acclaim from both the critics as well as the music blogs. it's kind of hard to describe what her music sounds like, so i guess it's better to just show you..

lykke li - little bit

----------

meanwhile, the hood internet (http://www.thehoodinternet.com) are a chicago-based group specializing in mashups of hiphop tracks with indie and sometimes pop songs. though the artists they decide to mash together would make you go wtf (dizzee rascal vs cyndi lauper?), somehow they make it work. they regularly release a compilation of their mashups on their site, and recently released volume 3.

i decide to feature them both at the same time because it turns out i wasn't the only one infatuated with lykke li's music. the hood internet is as well, and they decided to make a lykke li mashup album featuring six of her songs mixed with the likes of booka shade, digitalism, and gui boratto. this one is massive.

MUSIC WE LIKE (AND YOU SHOULD TOO): LADYHAWKE

10/19/2008 / Comments (1) / by Mark Lim

Ladyhawke (http://www.myspace.com/ladyhawkerock) is the alias of New Zealander Pip Brown, an indie pop darling whose music is a throwback to the sound of those great female 80's icons. In each of her songs she seems to be channeling a particular muse, be it Blondie or Nicks, and maybe even a bit of "Like A Virgin" era Madonna. Her songs all have killer hooks and catchy choruses that will bound to get you singing along before the song ends. This is definitely one Kiwi to watch out for.

isn't the snoopy shirt simply adorable?

bigfish, the premiere dance event production company in manila, has been successfully carrying out the best local raves featuring world-renowned djs. they will do just the same in this year's cream halloween ball, the longest and most famous costume dance party in the country. If you're a trance fan, take time to catch your breath for they booked the world famous trance trio, Above & Beyond, for you! Placing 6th in last year's dj mag top 100, you are bound to approve this position as they fill in the huge halls of the world trade center with an ethereal dance-inducing mix that will surely put you in trance. you only get to play dress-up once in awhile, so do it good and you might just win a nokia xpressmusic phone as well. as always, this will be one dope of a dance event to experience. get ready to dance in trance. no vice, keep things clean.
